Person struck, killed on I-70 after exiting ambulance in Bond County, Ill.

BOND COUNTY, Ill. (First Alert 4) - A person was struck and killed on Interstate 70 Monday morning after police say they exited an ambulance.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident happened just before 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Exit 45 in Bond County.

Troopers say a patient being transported by Carle Ambulance became combative during the trip, causing the ambulance to stop on the shoulder.

The patient left the ambulance and ran into oncoming traffic, where a SEMI struck them. They were taken to the hospital for treatment, where they were pronounced dead.

The crash is still under investigation.
