COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – First responders in Southeastern North Carolina used Narcan to save a dog who was found unresponsive from a drug overdose.

Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office were called to respond to a home in Whiteville where they found a puppy and her owner unresponsive.

“Normally when we go in residences, dogs are alert, oriented, and they’re barking at us, stuff like that,” responding Detective Shay Rogers said.

Authorities believed the dog ingested whatever drug was present in the home.

First responders istered Narcan to the puppy and her owner, saving both their lives.

“It was kind of a group effort,” Rogers said.

Whiteville Rescue provided additional care, taking both the man and the puppy, now named Girlie, to the hospital.

“Sadly, overdoses are something we go to a lot,” Rogers said. But helping people is not something out of the ordinary.

You always hear cats have nine lives, but because of the work of these deputies, we know Girlie has at least two.
