HAUBSTADT, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) - Authorities say the gunman is in custody after three people were killed and another was critically injured in a shooting at an Indiana home.

Gibson County Sheriff Bruce Vanoven says multiple calls came in around 8:30 p.m. Thursday for shots fired at a home near Haubstadt. According to a search warrant request, 77-year-old Patrick Waite also called 911, telling officers he shot several people and would be waiting outside.

Waite was arrested as soon as officials arrived on scene. He has been charged with murder, WFIE reports.

Authorities say three people, including two women and a man, were found dead inside the home. Another man was found critically wounded and taken to the hospital.

“This was a tragedy,” Vanoven said. “Gibson County is suffering the loss of these deceased individuals, and we will come together as a community to heal.”

Four other people at the home witnessed the shooting, with deputies saying one was a juvenile. None of them were hurt.

A statement of probable cause shows Waite was cooperative when deputies arrived, telling them where to find his Smith & Wesson handgun. The sheriff did not rule out the possibility of more charges being filed against Waite.

“We’re gonna compile all of this information that we’re getting from the witnesses, the evidence, the autopsy, and we’re going to compile a probable cause affidavit that we will present to the prosecutor for their review, and then, they will file charges,” Vanoven said.

Autopsies for the victims are scheduled for Monday. Officials say Waite will appear in court virtually the same day.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, including the Indiana State Police.
