IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - A veteran is celebrating a major milestone.

Norbert Meyer was born on March 16, 1925, and just celebrated his 100th birthday.

He enlisted with the Air Force when he was 18 years old and worked as a B-29 bombardier. Meyer was awaiting orders to fight in the Pacific when World War II came to an end.

Now, the Iowa City VA Health Care System is helping celebrate his birthday.

Meyer has a simple secret to longevity.

“You just stay alive I guess,” he said. “You have good help. All my kids are very good to me and take care of me. And I guess that’s how I’ve reached it.”

Iowa City VA Health Care System gave Meyer a signed letter from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs thanking him for his service and wishing him a happy birthday.
