TROY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Police in Troy are investigating several reports over the past week involving stolen or damaged doorbell cameras in residential neighborhoods.

Surveillance video shared with authorities shows a group of teens walking through yards in neighborhoods near Highway J late at night. Police believe the suspects are traveling in a pickup truck and targeting homes with visible security devices.

“They’re attempting to either vandalize or take Ring doorbell cameras,” said Maj. Dustyn Tienter with the Troy Police Department. “Depending on the type of security system in place, it could determine whether it’s a felony or a misdemeanor.”

April Hall lives in one of the targeted neighborhoods. She says she initially dismissed the behavior but became concerned after learning of the crimes.

“I mean, kids will be kids… we all did stuff as teenagers,” Hall said. “But there comes a point between practical jokes and destruction of property.”

“You also need to know where your kids are at midnight,” Hall added.

Police are urging residents to report suspicious activity and ensure their video systems are backed up. While the cases so far have not resulted in injury, Tienter says the behavior could escalate if homeowners feel threatened.

“A property owner does have the right to protect their property,” he said, “but it has to be done in a reasonable manner.”

Missouri’s Castle Doctrine allows homeowners to use deadly force if someone unlawfully enters their home and poses a threat, but not solely to defend property. Authorities say the suspects should be aware of the risks they’re taking.
