‘The Wire’ actor’s son thrown nearly 300 feet from home in tornado
ATLANTA (WANF/Gray) - The son of actor Tray Chaney is fighting for his life after he was thrown from his home during a tornado.
Tray Chaney, best known for playing Malik “Poot” Carr on HBO’s “The Wire,” said his son 18-year-old Malachai Chaney is in the ICU with several broken ribs and a fractured bone in his face.
“I wish I could replace the pain with my son,” Tray Chaney said in tears in a video posted to Instagram. “I wish he were the one who was doing the video and I was still in the ICU.”
Officials said Malachi Chaney was thrown from his home when a tornado ed through. He landed almost 100 yards away by the wood line behind the house.
Malachi Chaney was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, while his father was taken to Piedmont Henry for minor injuries.
The Chaney’s home was destroyed in the tornado, and at least 13 structures were damaged in the Laurel Creek neighborhood where they lived.
Neighbors said the tornado appeared very suddenly and with no warning. And, officials said the calls for damage and rescue were coming in at the same time the National Weather Service confirmed the tornado.
“It’s very scary that it would form so quickly and without warning and cause this amount of damage,” Henry County Police Deputy Chief Jason Bolton said. “You just never know.”
