ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - One person was killed and two others were injured in a Wednesday afternoon crash in St. Louis.

The two-vehicle crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. at North Broadway and Calvary. First Alert 4 obtained video surveillance from a nearby business, showing the deadly collision.

“Car came into the intersection and collided with a dump truck,” said Lt. Paul Lauer with SLMPD.

Lauer said the sedan was traveling southbound on North Broadway when the driver decided to swerve around traffic, run the red light, and hit a truck traveling on Calvary.

“There are speed limits for a reason; there are traffic control signals for a reason. People need to obey those,” said Lauer.

Lauer pointed to another fatal crash, one at Vandeventer and Page on Wednesday morning, where he said a driver also went around traffic and ran a red light.

“If people would go the speed limit and stop in the intersection like we’re supposed to, we could avoid all those fatalities,” said Lauer.

The crash happened on the same stretch of road where Candice Swearengen was killed after a speeding, wrong-way driver ran into her vehicle. The crash happened in March.

Neighbors told us at the time that the street wasn’t safe.

“It’s a madhouse on Broadway,” said Brad Mills, who lives nearby.

Alderwoman for the area, Sharon Tyus, told First Alert 4 on the phone that she’s hoping to put retired police officers out on traffic patrol to help prevent these types of situations. She introduced the bill last year, but it is on pause due to state control of the police department.

Charles Bryson with Trailnet told us traffic calming measures need to happen. But before any long-term plan, the city could take short-term measures to slow drivers down and stop drivers from going around traffic.

The 30-year-old driver and the 25-year-old backseat enger in the car were in stable condition after the crash. A 31-year-old enger in the front seat of the car died.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police could not yet say if the victims were wearing seat belts or how fast they were going.
