Spire assesses storm damage, looks for gas leaks
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Spire has been responding to gas leak calls since the May 16 tornado.
Debris falling on gas meters is one of the main causes of the leaks. They are asking residents and volunteers who are out cleaning up debris to be diligent and report any smell of gas.
Spire crews have been out on the streets inspecting the homes and businesses along their gas lines. Using detectors and probes, they are checking for any leaks. If they find one, they make quick repairs.
Tanner Worley, a leak foreman with Spire, said, “We’re taking our gas detectors, letting them take readings. If it sniffs anything out, then we’ll start probing.”
If some of the lines are buried, Spire said repairs may take longer, as they will have to excavate the site.
Worley said, “If we find anything, we’ll report it and respond to it as needed.”
Spire warns that if you smell gas, call them immediately. Avoid using anything that could ignite the gas.
Dallas Jones, the director of services for Spire, said, “Anything can be turned into an ignition source, whether it’s a phone, a light switch, or static electricity of some sort.”
As power continues to return to areas impacted by the tornado, Spire says it expects service calls to increase.
If you smell gas, call Spire on their emergency line at 800-887-4173.
