Mo Attorney General issues consumer alert for 23andMe bankruptcy

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has issued a consumer alert Friday for 23andMe’s bankruptcy filing.

If you believe 23andMe owes you money, file a claim form. If you were a victim of the 2023 23andMe data breach, you can file a special proof of claim, which you can find here. The deadline to file a claim is July 14, 2025.

The Attorney General’s office said consumers of 23andMe may have their genetic data and genetic material sold as an asset in the company’s bankruptcy case. The office released steps for consumers to delete their genetic data from the site:

  1. to your 23andMe .
  2. Go to the “Settings” section of your profile.
  3. Scroll down to a section labeled “23andMe Data” at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click “View” next to “23andMe Data.”
  5. your data if you want to retain a copy of your genetic data for personal storage.
  6. Scroll down to the “Delete Data” section.
  7. Click “Permanently Delete Data.”
  8. Confirm your request by following the instructions emailed to you by 23andMe. You must confirm the request to have your data removed.

If consumers previously opted into 23andMe and third-party researchers using their genetic data and samples for research, the AG’s office says they can withdraw their consent in settings under Research and Product consents.

23andMe filed for bankruptcy on March 23, 2025 and it has plans on selling all of its assets by June 17, 2025, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
