Businesses and neighbors in Delmar Maker District looking for help as tornado recovery continues
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The needs continue to grow for people in the Delmar corridor as crews continue to restore power and stabilize buildings.
On Wednesday, Steve’s Hot Dogs hosted a supply drive and grilled hotdogs for the surrounding community.
Steve’s is part of a cluster of restaurants that just opened up on Delmar alongside the Fountain on Locust, Nixta and the ABC Distillery. Their building sustained heavy damage to its roof, HVAC, gas lines and other systems.
But Danni Eickenhorst, the co-owner of Steve’s and the Fountain, said that she felt the surrounding community had more pressing needs. Many nearby businesses will be considered total losses.
“We’re out of business for the foreseeable future,” she said. “But we’re probably, rightfully not the priority for getting fixed. There are others who need to be fixed first.”
The event included for businesses through the St. Louis Development Corporation and Delmar Main Street, which provided internet and resources for businesses to fill out damage reports and talk about next steps for their recovery.
Lisa Potts, the Vice-President of Delmar Main Street, said many businesses were looking for alternative or temporary storefronts to set up shop. Her organization is seeking out commercial space available for lease.
“This neighborhood was just starting to thrive, and we need to be able to stand up to help get it back,” she said.
