ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Friday’s tornado badly damaged the roof on Kenneth Hayden’s house on Cupples Place. During Monday night’s storms, the roof leaked. Adding to Hayden’s frustration is the fact that he’s been without electricity since Friday afternoon.

“Had to use candles. I got some lanterns, outside lanterns, the kind you fish with. I’ve got some of those,” he said.

According to Ameren Missouri, nearly 200,000 customers lost power in the tornado. However, service has been restored to 168,000 customers.

Ameren customers have endured power outages in the past that were caused by storms, but ReRe McBride said this time was different.

“Out of all the times the electricity went out this was a real catastrophe,” she said.

The tornado broke 350 power poles in St. Louis. The damage was so extensive that line crews from Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Indiana came to St. Louis to help with the repairs.

Terry Covington’s house also lost power, but he’s a parent with kids to worry about during the period without electricity.

“Can’t clean, shower really can’t prepare no meals to eat,” he said.

According to an Ameren spokesperson, the company is hopeful that all power will be restored by the end of the week.
