3 men accused of stealing copper wire from storm damaged area

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Three men are accused of stealing copper wire from storm-damage areas in St. Louis and Granite City.

Jesse Page, 37, Joshua Mueller, 44, and Jeffrey Meek are charged with tampering with service of utility and stealing $750 or more.

Police say an officer who was patrolling an area that was hit by Friday’s tornado noticed there was a large pick-up truck with Illinois plates that was uned. The officer then conducted covert surveillance on the truck believing it might have been used to steal copper from downed power lines.

The car eventually stopped and the three suspects got out and were detained. The officer said he noticed bare wire in the bed of the truck,

Police say Meek itted that he, Mueller and Page were scouting locations for copper wire. Meek also told officers that some of the wire in the back of the truck came from St. Louis City and Granite City.
