(InvestigateTV) — According to NerdWallet, online searches for solo travelers were up 36% in 2023 compared to 2022.

Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet, said there’s definitely a growing interest in taking a solo trip. It can be fun and adventurous and there are ways to make it safe too. She said one way to plan a solo trip is to use a tour company.

“There are tour groups for all sorts of ideas and vacation styles. So, there’s companies like Spice Roads or Back Roads, and these companies take people on usually biking and hiking tours,” French shared. “So, these are great for people who are active. And I’ve been on these tours, and there’s always at least one solo traveler on there, and you end up making friends with them.”

A quick search online will return many options for solo travelers. French said just do the research, look up each company, and read the reviews of past travelers.

“If you are concerned about the safety aspect of solo travel, tools like Uber and Lyft have features where you can share your ride location with someone else,” she said. “Even I have ‘Find My’ on my smartphone, specifically on my iPhone’s ‘Find My’ and I share that with my fiancé and my parents just because I want them to know where I am.”

French said another trick is to take multiple credit cards on the trip. Carry one and keep another stashed in a bag or backpack, just in case one is lost or stolen.

Those traveling overseas should make a copy of their port. Then either carry the original at all times or keep it locked in a hotel safe.
