NTSB releases cause of 2023 Greyhound crash in Metro East
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The National Transportation Safety Board has determined the cause of a Greyhound bus crash.
On July 12, 2023, a Greyhound bus went off the road at the westbound I-70 Silver Lake rest stop, colliding with multiple tractor-trailers parked along the shoulder. In all, 14 people were injured, and three died.
On Tuesday, investigators said the crash was caused by the bus driver veering off the road due to fatigue. They revealed that the driver had an irregular work-rest schedule and was awake for a prolonged period of time.
The report stated that Greyhound Lines, Inc. contributed because they failed to “mitigate the motorcoach driver’s recurring unsafe driving behaviors.”
According to investigators, another contributing factor was that three semi-trucks were parked along the shoulder of the exit ramp due to a lack of parking. In Illinois, it is illegal to park overnight on highway shoulders, but in other states, including Missouri, it is legal.
Investigators also said that bus engers not wearing seatbelts contributed to the severity of injuries suffered by engers.
In response, the National Transportation Safety Board issued safety recommendations to six entities, including the U.S. Department of Transportation and Greyhound Bus Lines.
