St. Louis County Animal Shelter reopens after Parvo outbreak
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The St. Louis County Animal Care and Control Adoption Center has reopened to the public after a Parvovirus outbreak.
The center was 19 dogs who tested positive for Parvo and showed clinical symptoms were euthanized to prevent the spread of the virus to the entire facility.
On May 19, the center reopened to the public after extensive decontamination efforts. The Department of Public Health said that the shelter has received a designation of a Fear Free Shelter after all employees and volunteers successfully completed training designed to improve the experiences of animals by educating shelter and rescue employees and volunteers about the emotional needs of shelter animals.
Upon reopening, the shelter had 204 dogs and 22 cats. The shelter has also requested that the St. Louis County Council Bill 41, which would grant the Director of Public Health the authority to reduce or waive adoption fees.
