ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A severe storm that moved through St. Louis on Friday caused significant damage in the Delmar Maker District, affecting several small businesses and nearby homes.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Delmar Boulevard between Kingshighway and Union, where high winds and flying debris damaged storefronts, signage and residential structures behind the commercial strip.

Beyond Sweet Restaurant & Bar, a restaurant that opened in December 2023, was among the businesses impacted. Owner Dallas Holland-Mims said the restaurant sustained structural damage and is a total loss.

“We were booked and busy every day,” she said. “I’m still in shock.”

Mims was the first to open under a planned redevelopment of the area known as the Delmar Maker District, which aims to creative small businesses and restaurants. Several other businesses on the block can be seen with damage.

Cleanup continued throughout the weekend as business owners and residents worked to remove debris. Some volunteers from the surrounding neighborhoods came to assist.

“Total strangers,” Mims said, “And I couldn’t do it without them.”

Nearby residential areas also experienced damage. Residents reported broken windows, downed trees and roof damage.

The Maker District was planning to host its first community market event on Sunday, which was expected to showcase local vendors and artists. That event has been canceled due to the storm damage.

“I give myself thirty days, and we’ll have a new home,” Mims said. “I don’t know if it will be in this neighborhood, but I need to reopen Beyond Sweet.”
