2 dead, 3 injured in North County crash involving stolen car
The car was being pursued by a Riverview officer before the crash
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Two people are dead and three people are injured in a crash Sunday in Bellefontaine Neighbors.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the crash happened on Bellefontaine Road and Shepley Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors. The crash happened around 1:30 p.m.
The Mayor of Riverview, Mike Cornell, said the crash involved a stolen vehicle that a Riverview Police Officer was pursuing. The car had been linked to several crimes in various municipalities in the area. Cornell said the stolen car was traveling northbound on Bellefontaine Road at 90 mph when the Riverview officer fell back. He said while on Bellefontaine Road, the car switched into an oncoming traffic lane and crashed head-on into a pickup truck.
Cornell said that inside the stolen car were three male juveniles and one adult man. Two of the four people in the stolen car were killed in the crash. The other two were taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries. A woman in the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a man in the pickup truck refused medical treatment.
The ages of those involved in the crash have not yet been released.
“As the Mayor of the City of Riverview, I extend my condolences to those affected by this unfortunate situation,” Cornell said.
The Riverview officer involved in this incident has been placed on istrative paid leave as a formality because of the impact this incident could have, Cornell said.
