Police: Man shot, killed overnight in Wood River

Police are investigating after a man was found shot and later died in Wood River overnight.

WOOD RIVER, Ill. (First Alert 4) - Police are investigating after a man was found shot and later died in Wood River overnight.

According to a release from the Wood River Police Department, officers and the Wood River Fire Department were dispatched to 242 E. Ferguson Ave. around 10:15 p.m.

On scene, officers found a man in front of the building, who stated that another man had been shot and was lying behind the building.

Police found the victim and began life-saving measures with EMS.

Officers from neighboring agencies, including East Alton, Bethalto, Hartford, Roxana, and South Roxana, responded to assist in securing the area.

According to police, the man in front of the building was the one who fired at the victim. He was taken into custody.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in Alton, IL, and then flown to a St. Louis-area hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Wood River Police Department responded to the scene, and a Crime Scene Technician from the Illinois State Police was requested to assist with crime scene processing. As the investigation continues, the individual taken into custody is being held at the Wood River City Jail.

The Wood River Police Department says there is no ongoing threat to public safety and the scene has been fully secured.
