Janitor accused of molesting child during elementary school hours

LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – An elementary school janitor in Louisiana was arrested for allegedly molesting a child during school hours.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested Christopher Dennis Abery, 38, on Thursday. He is charged with molestation of a juvenile.

The sheriff’s office said the alleged molestation happened on Tuesday at Seventh Ward Elementary School during school hours. They did not give further details about what happened.

Abery was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Jail records show he is being held without bond.

The school district said in a statement that Abery has been placed on istrative leave and is not present on campus.

Abery has been employed with Livingston Parish Public Schools since August 2024.

“According to his records, he met all onboarding requirements, including the criminal background check, as required by state law when hired,” the district said in a statement, in part. “Livingston Parish Public Schools is firmly committed to the safety and well-being of all students and staff, as our istration will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement throughout the course of the investigation.”
