More retailers struggle with a surge in shoplifting

In the past year, major retailers like Target and REI shut down stores in Portland, citing unsustainable crime levels.

(InvestigateTV) — Theft is nothing new to retailers, big and small.

In a matter of seconds, thieves shatter the glass of a storefront and make off with anything they can carry. The smash and grab is still a common way retailers lose thousands of dollars.

Even retail giants are not immune to theft. In 2023, Target said it added more team , used third-party guard services and implemented theft deterrent tools, but still faced challenges.

They even had to close store locations.

As major retailers strategize ways to minimize theft, some small businesses say they don’t have the same resources to curb this crime.

Reporter Ezra Kaplan shows us how some mom-and-pop shops in Portland, Oregon, navigate a break-in to their businesses.
