Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter announces retirement
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest) - After 14 years in the Major Leagues, St. Louis Cardinals long-time infielder Matt Carpenter has announced he will retire from baseball.
The Cardinals officially announced Carpenter’s retirement via social media Wednesday morning.
The Texas native was drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB draft. He spent 12 of his 14 professional years with St. Louis and was on the team that won the World Series in 2011.
For his career, Carpenter finished with a .259 batting average, 179 home runs, and 659 RBIs. He was a three-time MLB All-Star, winning the National League Silver Slugger Award in 2013, and leading the NL in hits, runs, and doubles in 2013.
He also holds the Cardinals franchise record for most doubles by a left-handed batter, according to MLB.com.
