(InvestigateTV) — Mental health experts say a large percentage of college and university students suffer from some type of loneliness.

A recent survey by the nonprofit group Active Minds found that 64.7% of college students reported feeling lonely.

Arizona State University has started a unique and creative program to help students feel less isolated.

It’s called the “Friendship Bench.” The program connects students with senior citizens, creating opportunities to talk and interact.

Pencie Culiver is one of several senior citizens who signed up to help students cope on campus.

The 80-year-old grandmother is not a professor or licensed psychologist, but if ASU students need someone to talk to, Culiver is willing to listen.

Reporter Jason Barry introduces us to Pencie and shows us how the Friendship bench is encouraging people to connect in person.
