Fired Disney World employee sentenced to prison for hacking system, changing menus

ORLANDO, Fla. (Gray News) – A former Disney employee who hacked into the company’s servers has been sentenced to three years in prison, according to authorities.

Michael Scheuer was fired from Disney last June for misconduct.

Scheuer’s job in Florida was to create and publish menus for Disney’s restaurants.

According to officials, Scheuer hacked into Disney’s menu creation servers multiple times to manipulate the menus. Some of the changes made included changing the prices of items and adding profane language.

He also reportedly altered allergen information on the menus to indicate some items were safe for customers with certain allergies when they were not.

Additionally, Scheuer altered information on the menus relating to wine regions to reflect locations of recent mass shootings, and launched denial-of-service attacks which would lock certain other employees out of their s.

In January, Scheuer pleaded guilty to one count of computer fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Scheuer’s attorney said he was remorseful and apologetic.

In addition to prison time, Scheuer is required to pay nearly $690,000 in restitution, with most of that going to Disney. He was also ordered to surrender the computer he used to commit the crimes.
