Video shows suspected street racing crash that injured 13 people
LANSING, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) - Thirteen people were injured in a large multi-vehicle crash that police believe was caused by an illegal street race.
Lansing police reported it happened at the intersection of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Pierce Road around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to police, two cars were racing on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd when a third car turned onto the street. While trying to avoid hitting the third car, the two racing cars crashed into each other and spun into oncoming traffic.
At least five cars were involved in the crash.
Those injured vary from 3 to 52 years old. The two drivers of the suspected racing cars are in critical condition.
“I am angry that these selfish, reckless drivers created an unsafe situation that led to such a horrible accident on S MLK, inflicting so much harm to innocent bystanders,” Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said in a statement.
Schor said that those involved in the suspected street racing have been identified and will face “serious consequences for the harm they caused.”
“The Lansing Police Department will recommend all charges possible, as found by the evidence, to the Prosecutor to hold those responsible able,” he said.
