(InvestigateTV) — There is a mental health crisis among teenagers in America.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 40% of high school students in 2023 experienced persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

A picture of 13-year-old Lilah Smith, holding plates full of muffins, was featured in a Facebook post by her dad, Chris. His goal was to land his daughter an apprenticeship at a local bakery and share Lilah’s story, because it might help others.

Lilah’s story includes a traumatic chapter that took place in late October of 2024 - a suicide attempt.

The Michigan teenager is now speaking out about her experience and hopes to break the stigma.

She’s also sharing her newfound coping strategy that she calls a recipe for recovery.
