More than 25 tons of storm debris collected in Florissant in the weeks following March storms
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Communities across the St. Louis region are still cleaning up from March tornadoes that left widespread damage.
In Florissant, crews have collected more than 25 tons of tree debris. The branches, stumps and mulch now form an impressive pile in Saint Ferdinand Park.
Patrick Mulcahy, the city’s director of istration, said the debris had been collected from more than 13 hundred homes in Florissant. More than 150 houses sustained structural damage in the city as well.
Mulcahy said that the cleanup was almost finished in the city, though some residents are still working to repair property damage.
“I think it’s a testament to how resilient the Florissant community is,” Mulcahy said.
More storms are forecasted for Easter weekend. Mulcahy said emergency officials were encouraging neighbors to pay attention to the incoming weather.
“Our office of emergency management is keeping an eye on storms. They work with the National Weather Service. If it gets to where we need a response, they’ll take that action,” Mulcahy said.
Other communities in St. Louis County have been working on their own cleanup efforts.
The Creve Coeur Soccer Complex, one of the largest youth sports facilities in the region, was among the hardest hit. A tornado in March caused approximately $8 million in damage to the complex’s 13 synthetic turf fields, damaging the underlying bedding and rendering the surfaces unsafe.
“The turf is not in its original condition, which presents a hazard to players,” said Mike Hayes, the complex’s director.
Repairs to the county-owned facility are set to begin next week. St. Louis County Parks Director Brian Schaffer said restoring the fields is urgent ahead of the complex’s busy summer season.
“We have two large tournaments in June every year. One is estimated to bring about $10 million to the economy through hotels and restaurants. We’re rushing to get it up and running,” Schaffer said. “Last year, there were over a million visitors to Creve Coeur Soccer Park.”
The county is also considering upgrades to the facility during the repair process, including the installation of new LED lighting.
“It’s weird not to have activity out here,” Hayes said. “At the end of the day, our goal is to be better than we were before.”
