Dog attack in North County leaves woman, 4-year-old seriously injured
“I was out there fighting for my life”
NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Police in north St. Louis County are looking for the owners of one of two pitbulls that were caught on camera attacking a woman and her daughter.
The attack happened in unincorporated St. Louis County and left the mother and her 4-year-old with serious injuries. The mother spent seven days in the hospital recovering and was released on Thursday.
“I was out there fighting for my life,” said Markeisha Eberhart.
Gruesome and graphic video of a mother fighting off two pitbulls as her 4-year-old daughter watches after being attacked by the dogs herself.
“Trying to keep these dogs from biting my baby because they were biting her too, but I more so let them bite me instead of her,” said Eberhart.
Eberhart says the attack happened around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. She went to pick up her trash cans, not making it back to the door before the dogs struck.
“For her, right here on her hand, on her butt, the back of her leg and she has scratches. Me, on the other hand, I got stitches here, I have nine stitches in this foot, I have stitches in my arm, I have stitches on this part of my thigh, and this is the worst... My arm is still open,” said Eberhart.
She says she or her daughter has not been able to sleep since the April 10 attack.
“Waking up out of my sleep because I’m being chased by some dogs,” said Eberhart.
It happened near Chambers and West Florissant.
“It’s dogs that run up and down this street all the time. Come to find out my mail lady was attacked by these same dogs before I was,” said Eberhart.
Eberhart wants something done to prevent anyone else from being attacked.
“Hold these owners able. Animal control told me the same thing, they were trying to find the owners, and I had to send them pictures of me and my daughter’s wounds so they could determine if the dog was deemed dangerous or not, and it’s just like they almost killed us, what do you mean?” asked Eberhart.
Animal Control and St. Louis County Police are still investigating.
correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the attack happened in Dellwood.
