ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest) - St. Louis CITY SC’s home, Energizer Park, has been awarded LEED Gold certification for Operations and Maintenance by the U.S. Green Building Council for its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the club announced Wednesday.

LEED Gold certification can be given to newly constructed or existing buildings and is a globally recognized standard for a building’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.

This is the first time a St. Louis sporting venue has been named a recipient of this award.

“After launching our Goal: ZERO campaign to reach zero waste for our MLS matches last year, we challenged ourselves to continue to embrace new and collaborative ways to engage fans and advance our sustainability practices,” said Diego Gigliani, St. Louis CITY SC President and GM. “We are proud our efforts are being recognized with LEED Gold certification. Sustainability is about more than doing what is good for our environment – it’s about doing what is resourceful, efficient, and innovative for the future of our community, and we are thrilled to be a leader in the sports industry.”

The club will celebrate the new designation and its many sustainability efforts leading up to Earth Day on Saturday, April 19, during its match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. On Saturday, the team will be wearing the adidas One Planet Pre-Match Top, which is also on sale at CITY Pavilion.

In addition, a reusable silicone bag, sponsored by Moneta, will be given out to the first 7,000 fans who enter Energizer Park.

In April 2024, CITY SC launched Goal: ZERO, which aims to reach zero waste status by diverting more than 90 percent of all waste produced at its MLS matches away from the landfill. In 2024, CITY SC diverted an average of 90.3% of waste away from the landfill, including composting over 42 tons, and has reached zero waste status for all its home 2025 MLS matches.
