Troy man ejected from ATV and struck by driver, family calls for more safety laws
‘I don’t think they should be allowed on paved roads.’
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Thirty-three-year-old Todd Bishop was killed after he was ejected from his ATV and struck by a driver nearly two weeks ago. The accident happened in Lincoln County, near Troy. His family hopes to change Missouri law and save other ATV riders before it’s too late.
“It still blows my mind that that happened to him because he knows everything about four-wheelers,” said Matthew Bishop.
Matthew Bishop is Todd’s brother, he says the two were thick as thieves. He’s calling for changes to two Missouri laws in his brother’s honor.
“I know a lot of people around here are going to disagree with me when I say this, but I don’t think they should be allowed on paved roads,” said Bishop.
ATVs are allowed on Missouri’s public roads, but you should be going less than 30 miles per hour. You aren’t required to wear a helmet as long as you’re 18 or older. That’s a revision to the original universal helmet law, which took effect in 2020.
“You hear about these things on the news and its just like oh that’s sad and go on but when it’s you and it’s your family and it’s your child, it’s a whole different thing and something needs to be done with these laws, they can’t just keep letting people die,” said Vickie Bishop, Todd’s Mother.
Todd’s birthday, just a week away. His family is left celebrating his life without him. They want Missouri ATV riders to learn from his mistakes.
“Going to the woods, mudding, and stuff like that, that’s what they’re made for. Not going from one place to another,” said Stephen Bishop, Todd’s Father.
“I wish he would have thought twice and at least put a helmet on, that would have made me feel a lot better,” said Matthew Bishop.
The family has organized a lantern release for Todd’s birthday on Friday. The GoFundMe link for Todd’s funeral costs can be found here.
