CITY SC falls to Columbus Crew at Energizer Park

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Louis CITY SC fell to the Columbus Crew 2-1 in a Sunday night match at Energizer Park.
CITY scored early in the first half, marking their first goal since they played Philadelphia on March 22. The goal was a reminder of 2023, with Célio Pompeu offering an assist to João Klauss. Pompeu crossed into the box right to Klauss, who took a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back to Klauss, who was able to take a header into the bottom right corner past Columbus’ Patrick Schulte.
The goal was Klauss’ first of the season.
Columbus leveled the score in extra minutes of the first half with a shot by Steven Moreira from CITY’s box that got past Ben Lundt.
CITY and Columbus went into halftime tied 1-1.
In the second half, Columbus’ Diego Rossi scored in minute 55, granting them a lead they would keep for the rest of the match.
CITY had several attempts to level the match, including Klauss meeting the back of the net again, but was ultimately called offsides. Marcel Hartel sent a corner kick into the box where Timo Baumgartl headed it to Klauss who poked it into the bottom left corner.
“From the camera that we watch in the locker room, it looks like I was onside,” Klauss said to press after the match. “I don’t know. I think maybe we have to watch from another angle or another camera. Maybe they had more angles than us, and this can explain maybe I was offside, but from the camera that we watch, I was onside.”
Another close chance came in minute 72 when Simon Becher snagged a bad by Columbus inside of their box. Unfortunately, his left-footed shot went wide.
CITY matched the Columbus side with 12 shots to their 13, with six of CITY’s being on target against the Crew’s five. But yet again, a series of “almosts” prevented CITY from winning a match.
Josh Yaro ed the list of injured CITY players late in the first half. Yaro had gone to take a header from a cross by a Columbus player and, after making with the ball, fell to the ground, where he stayed until medical staff reached him. After being checked out on the sidelines, Yaro went back in but was pulled minutes later and Akil Watts took over.
Yaro would make the eighth CITY player out for injury with Rasmus Alm, Roman Bürki, Chris Durkin, Jannes Horn, Joakim Nilsson, Jay Reid and Tomas Totland all listed as out for injury before the match Sunday. Eduard Löwen was also listed as unavailable for the match for a non-specified non-injury reason.
CITY’s next match is Saturday against Vancouver at Energizer Park.
