Residents say they feel safe downtown amid busy sports weekend
‘I don’t see anything to be unsafe about.’
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - It’s a busy weekend downtown for sports fans, as St. Louis hosts the Frozen Four Hockey Tournament and the Cardinals begin a series at home.
“I’m here with my kids and grandkids coming to the ballgame this weekend,” said Mike Munday.
“We’re headed to the Cardinals game, Busch Stadium,” said Zander Ruth and Anna Johnston.
“We came to the Cardinal’s game and to get our goodies,” said Sherry Lynn Taylor and Norma Sultan.
Fans say there’s something to do everywhere you turn in Downtown St. Louis this weekend.
“It’s great, everywhere you turn there’s something to do, something to eat,” said Munday.
Munday and his family drove 4 hours from Kentucky to see the Cardinals play this weekend. He says he loves to see Downtown busy like it is, completely opposite from his small hometown.
“My son Aaron told me that it would be like 46,000 people in here tonight, that just blows my mind,” said Munday.
With all of the people, it brings safety concerns. The Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District has made sure multiple security devices are installed, including a mobile security robot.
While fans say they appreciate all of the extra precautions, they feel good about being downtown.
“I don’t see anything to be unsafe about,” said Munday.
“Just a normal city. Make sure you’re not by yourself and keep an eye out, but nothing specific to St. Louis,” said Zander Ruth and Anna Johnston.
“Even though the bad things happen in our community, that’s why we have to get together and have fun. So if they see us having fun, they might get a clue and have fun too,” said Sherry Lynn Taylor and Norma Sultan.
Security will be patrolling Downtown the entire weekend.
