More deer sighted in South City neighborhoods
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A number of South City residents have reported seeing deer roaming neighborhood streets and backyards this week.
On Wednesday the Gin Room, a popular cocktail bar on South Grand, posted a video of a deer just after it crashed through the businesses’ front window, running through the restaurant.
Natasha Bahrami, the owner of the restaurant, said the employee who took the video managed to calm down the deer until it left on its own.
Bahrami seemed to take the incident in stride, despite the damage to the business. She said employees had come in early on Wednesday to clean up the mess and that customers had come out to the bar that night.
“Let’s open our eyes and be welcoming to the fawns and deer ing us in our neighborhoods. As we say in South Grand, everyone is welcome here,” she said.
While Bahrami’s video grabbed attention on social media, other recent sightings have been reported in the same South City neighborhood.
Posts shared this week included deer jumping fences, running through yards, and even peeking through a bedroom window.
Dan Zarlenga, a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Conservation, said deer are especially active in the spring as does and fawns begin to roam. He added that recent flooding may have forced wildlife out of their normal habitats.
“When we have a big flooding event, you might see more wildlife because they’re being crowded out of those places by the water,” Zarlenga said.
He noted that while deer in city environments are generally not dangerous, residents should be cautious while driving and take steps to prevent window collisions.
“You can get streamers or stickers to put on there and break up that reflection,” he advised.
