ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run in the Gravois Park neighborhood.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police said the bicyclist was hit by a gray SUV at Gravois and Bamberger around 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday. According to police, the bicyclist was riding against traffic and was not at a crosswalk or electric signal when he was struck. The SUV drove off after the incident.

After the collision, the bicyclist landed in the westbound lanes of Gravois, where he was struck by three other vehicles. Two of those vehicles stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. Police later identified the victim as 27-year-old Jason Lewis of St. Peters.

Days after the incident, St. Louis police released photos showing the vehicle wanted in connection with the incident.

The SUV is described as a silver Ford Edge with no license plates. Police said it does have a dealer license plate placard attached to the rear and is believed to have heavy front-end damage.

Trailnet’s CEO Cindy Mense said Gravois is consistently one of the most dangerous streets in the city.

“Gravois is a key connector to many neighborhoods on either side of Gravois. People are just trying to connect from one neighborhood to the next, but Gravois sort of functions like a highway and people go really fast,” Mense said.

Trailnet data shows in the last five years, there have been 78 crashes on Gravois, and 25 of those were fatal.

“That area has an outdated treatment called a sharrow where cars are supposed to share the roadway with the cyclists so it is more dangerous. You’re mixing the two together. A protected bike lane would be the safest infrastructure to be included there on Gravois,” Mense said.

William Waller grew up in South City and said he was shocked to hear a car hit and killed a man. Waller said Gravois is full of people speeding.

“I feel distraught. I take it very serious when I see a cyclist on the road,” Waller said.

As police continue to look for the SUV and driver, Mense said hit-and-runs seem to be on the rise in the region.

“If you’re the first person to hit that cyclist or pedestrian, you’re also the first person who can call 911. We know in those emergencies those seconds matter,” Mense said.
