Demolition of Chesterfield Mall nearly complete
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Little remains of what used to be the Chesterfield Mall.
Demolition began at the site in October, clearing the site for a planned residential and commercial development called “Downtown Chesterfield.”
The Staenberg Group, the owner of the property and developer behind the project, plans to build 90 acres of dense residential, commercial and retail space. The project will also include 3.5 acres of green space with pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to other parks and trails in Chesterfield.
Michael Staenberg, the president of the company, said the demolition of the mall site should be completed by April 15. The next phase of the project will involve grading of the site and creating the infrastructure for the future development.
“We’ll be in a position to have all the infrastructure done for the project by September or October 2026,” he said.
Most of the former mall site is now a pile of scrap metal and other debris. On Tuesday, a few parts of the structure still stood, with a few remnants of the original stores still visible, such as AMC theater seats.
The Macy’s and Dillard’s buildings will remain in place for the development. Dillard’s plans to reopen its store. Staenberg plans to lease part of the former Macy’s building for retail, while moving his company’s offices to the rest of the building.
Staenberg said the company was also working with another company to break ground on a 200-unit apartment complex once the infrastructure work at the site was complete.
“There’s nothing like this in the United States. Nobody is building a downtown,” Staenberg said.
