ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Louis CITY SC lost 0-1 Sunday to Austin FC at Energizer Park. It was the team’s first loss at home in the 2025 season.

On the season, CITY is 2-2-2 and is currently ninth in the MLS Western Conference.

The match started strong for CITY as they dominated possession for the first 15 minutes. CITY was unable to convert possession and control of the game into an early lead. After the first 15 minutes, Austin took over possession. In minute 33, they burned a shot past Ben Lundt, earning their only goal of the match. CITY was unable to answer with a goal of their own.

In a second half that featured a 55-minute weather delay due to thunderstorms in the St. Louis area, there were a ton of chances for CITY to level the match that never panned out.

CITY subbed in Célio Pompeu and Akil Watts to try to shake things up at minute 61. A weather delay started at minute 68 and on the restart, CITY brought in João Klauss and Tomáš Ostrák. These four subs brought renewed energy to the match that seemed ripe for goal-scoring but ultimately fell flat.

CITY outshot Austin 16-8, with three of CITY’s shots being on target and two of Austin’s on target.

CITY’s starting 11 players focused a lot on defense, with five center-backs.

“I think we are trying to continue to find the right combination of people and the right combination of numbers going forward and to continue to generate chances,” forward Simon Becher said to the press after the match. “I don’t think tonight we generated enough.”

Scoring goals has been a problem plaguing St. Louis for the first six games of the season. In four of CITY’s matches this season, they’ve not scored a goal. In the two matches where CITY has met the back of the net, they’ve won.

“We just lacked the quality in the final third,” CITY head coach Olof Mellberg said in post-game comments. “I think you could see that, the amount of entries we have, and half-chances and chances, you know, we hope to score at least a goal, obviously.”

CITY fans will be looking for a good performance from their team next week as they travel for the first Interstate 70 derby of the season, facing off against Sporting Kansas City. That match is on Saturday and starts at 7:30 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park.
