Investigation underway after CJC inmate dies
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - An investigation is underway Sunday after an inmate at the St. Louis City Justice Center was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to Interim Corrections Commissioner Doug Burris, the male detainee had been taken to Saint Louis University Hospital on Saturday when he was found unresponsive by jail staff. Burris said a toxicology report from the hospital showed the incident wasn’t drug-related, and they suspected seizures.
After treatment at SLUH, the detainee was discharged and returned to the CJC.
Sunday morning, the man was found unresponsive again and was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Force Investigation Unit, which conducts all investigations for in-custody deaths at the jail, was ed at 9 a.m. Sunday to begin their investigation.
According to police, early investigation shows there were no obvious signs of trauma, and the detainee likely experienced a medical emergency.
Burris said more information will be released after the completion of a medical examiner’s report.
