Bond denied for suspects charged after St. Louis officer hit by car

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The two suspects charged in the incident that left a St. Louis police officer critically injured appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday afternoon.
When they arrived at the St. Louis City courtroom, Mekhi Campbell and Frank Carr were shackled.
Campbell, 18, was allegedly the driver of the Acura that led police on the chase onto Interstate 70. He is charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, aggravated fleeing and resisting arrest.
At the hearing, the defense argued that he does not have a criminal record and is a recent high school graduate. The prosecution told the court that due to the seriousness of his actions and the fact that he put “countless lives” at risk, Campbell should get no bond.
Carr, 62, is accused of driving the car that hit the officer and drove off. He is charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, causing serious injuries, and tampering with evidence.
Carr’s defense team said he was not aware that someone else had been hit. The prosecution stated that the evidence did not the claim. The prosecution also said that given the seriousness and ongoing nature of the investigation, including accident reconstruction and the possibility that someone may still die as a result of their injuries, a bond should not be allowed.
In court, prosecutors said that Carr’s bumper still had blood on it, and they have a search warrant to determine whose.
The judge sided with the prosecution for both suspects, declining to set a bond for each of them.
The St. Louis officer who was hit on the interstate near Shreve has had his leg partially amputated.
The suspect hit by the car is in the hospital in a critical and unstable condition. Police have said they have not been able to identify the suspect.
