(InvestigateTV) — According to NerdWallet, 26% of Americans have not made a monthly budget, but spring is the perfect season to change that.

Debt relief attorney Leslie Tayne recommended first reviewing your expenses for the next several months and create a clear plan. She also emphasized the importance of preparing for the unexpected costs by building up an emergency fund to cover unforeseen home or vehicle repairs.

“It is the perfect time to just sweep through all of your s and take a look not only at your bank statements,” Tayne suggested. “Your credit card bills, all outstanding debts that you have and look to see the best possible ways to meeting your expectations that maybe you set from the new year or your overall financial goals.”

She suggested closely reviewing subscription fees, as these expenses can add up and quickly. She also recommended going over credit card statements to see where your money is going each month pinpoint areas where spending could be reduced.

“ with budgeting and finances there’s always room for either improvements or adjustments,” Tayne said. “It should be super fluid, meaning it shouldn’t be so hard. And set in stone that you can’t make those adjustments and move around should something change. Whether it’s an increase or decrease in income or unexpected expenses.”

Tayne also reminded individuals that certain financial factors are beyond their control, such as changes in interest rates, taxes, or income levels.

Spring provides an excellent opportunity to review your financial situation and make necessary adjustments to stay on track toward achieving your financial goals for the rest of the year.
