CITY SC beats Seattle Sounders in front of home crowd, remains undefeated in 2025

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Louis CITY SC took a win against the Seattle Sounders Saturday during a drizzling match in front of their home crowd.
This is CITY’s first win against Seattle and the team’s second win of the season. A final score of 1-0 at Energizer Park has given CITY four consecutive shutouts in the 2025 season. If CITY manages to shut out Philadephia next weekend, they will break the MLS record for start-of-season shutouts.
The shutout was goalkeeper Ben Lundt’s first MLS clean sheet. Lundt was in goal for CITY after the team announced before the start of the match that CITY’s starting goalkeeper, Roman Bürki, suffered a fracture in his hand during practice on Friday.
“It was a wobbling shot,” CITY’s head coach Olof Mellberg said of what caused Bürki’s injury. “Took him by surprise, and [he] just threw out his hand in like a reflex. Wasn’t really prepared for it.”
CITY’s only goal of the night came 15 minutes into the match with a free kick outside of the Sounders’ box by Eduard Löwen. Löwen’s shot went over the Sounders’ defense and into the left side of the net outside of the reach of Seattle’s goalkeeper.
Despite the six other shots on goal and 14 shot attempts from CITY, no other shot met the back of the Sounders’ net.
CITY’s defense was in great form, especially from Henry Kessler, who had 12 clearances, two interceptions, six recoveries and a 94% ing accuracy.
CITY’s defense was strong in front of Lundt, who has not had a lot of game minutes in his time with the club since Bürki is CITY’s typical starter. Lundt made multiple good clearances during the match and made one save.
“I thought he did really well. He was solid,” Mellberg said of Lundt’s performance. “It’s different for us, obviously, because, I mean, Roman is a top, top goalkeeper in the world, I would say, in all aspects, shot-stopper, on the ball, in the air. So, you know, with that in mind, I thought he stepped up, Ben, and did extremely well, and a good performance to build on.”
As of publication time, the team hasn’t made any further announcements on Bürki’s injury, so it isn’t known if the 2023 goalkeeper of the year will be out for more than just Saturday’s match.

Seattle’s only chance to level the game was late in the second half with a called foul in CITY’s box that would have given the Sounders a penalty kick. However, after reviewing the play, head referee Fotis Bazakos ruled there was a handball by Seattle prior to the foul in the box, and recalled the penalty kick.
CITY will be in action again at 6:30 p.m. on March 22 against Philadelphia at Subaru Park.
