(InvestigateTV) — Imagine living with the possibility that the food you eat, how much you drink, or a change in temperature could trigger extreme, debilitating pain.

That’s what life is like for the millions worldwide who suffer from sickle cell disease, a chronic condition primarily found in those of African descent.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition that causes red blood cells to become rigid and deform into a crescent or sickle shape.

Sickled cells die early, and often become lodged in small blood vessels and restrict blood flow, which can lead to serious health problems throughout the body.

A little girl in North Carolina wrote about her experiences with sickle cell to raise awareness and help other children like her not be scared.

Reporter Natisha Lance speaks with this young author about her journey.
