Tips to help you save on Valentine’s Day
National Retail Federation: Americans will spend $27.5 billion on Valentine’s Day this year
(InvestigateTV) — A recent survey from WalletHub found that 34% of Americans don’t expect their Valentine to spend money on a gift for them this year.
Leslie Tayne, a debt relief attorney with Tayne Law Group, said Valentine’s Day is about showing someone they are truly loved. That doesn’t have to include a lot of expensive gifts, especially for those with tight budgets.
“I think an open discussion with your significant other is really important about spending and expectations because your love language is different than your significant others,” she said. “They might have a different expectation, especially if this is your first Valentine’s Day together.”
Tayne said people shouldn’t overspend and go beyond what they can afford just to show love and affection. Having an open discussion with significant others helps both people understand each other’s goals, and manage both expenses as well as expectations.
“ on Valentine’s Day, there are more expenses. Flowers are more expensive and candy’s more expensive and restaurants tend to be more expensive,” Tayne shared. “There’s lots of ways to get around that including cooking and planning and coming up with really creative ideas to show the person that you care about how much you care.”
Picnics, breakfast in bed, do-it-yourself gift baskets are just a few examples of low-cost, high-impact gifts. You could plan a scavenger hunt or make homemade treats together. Sometimes it’s just about making time to spend time together.
