ST. LOUIS (First Alert 4) - Pothole season is here, and crews are now shifting gears from plowing the snow to fixing the potholes.

“It’s very similar to how we prioritize our snow routes, with the weather like this today, it’s our number one priority. Every yard is out pothole patching,” said Joseph Monroe with the Illinois Department of Transportation District 8.

Crews were hard at work filling potholes during Wednesday’s warmer weather. Each truck has signs on the back indicating crews are at work.

“We have what are called TMAs, Truck Mounted Attenuators, they will have signs on the back of the truck, it’s a moving operation so signage really isn’t effective because they’ll be moving so quickly so you want to keep that sign notification,” said Monroe.

In Illinois, Scott’s Law requires you to slow down when approaching police or other emergency vehicles. Some drivers, like James Morton, say they don’t see road crews until it’s almost too late.

“There’s very few signs, they’ve got the signage within 400 to 500 feet of where they’re working on the concrete, but they do not have anything when the traffic starts backing up,” said James Morton, a semi-truck driver.

Morton says that he almost got into an accident recently trying to avoid a crew. IDOT tells me they do what they can to warn people about construction but everyone has to do their part.

Crews wear reflective vests so they can be seen more easily.
