ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A local charity working to prevent substance abuse is the newest partner to be highlighted in 4YOU.

Prevent+Ed is celebrating 60 years of serving the St. Louis area. Their mission is to reduce or prevent the harms of alcohol and other drug use through education, intervention and advocacy.

“This should not be a taboo topic,” Executive Director Jenny Armbruster said. “Struggles and addiction can happen to anyone.”

One of the ways Prevent+Ed is carrying out its mission is by working with local schools. The charity serves 240 schools and roughly 55,000 young people each year.

“We believe that prevention education should happen just like every other education,” Armbruster said. “Where age-appropriate lessons are delivered to students throughout their academic career.”

Another service is their Peer program. Certified Peer Specialists are people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations.

Vika Greer is currently enrolled in the Peer program as she navigates her recovery journey.

“I basically got a second chance. And that’s exactly what how I feel about the peer ,” Greer said. “I have light in my eyes because of them. My soul is coming back. It’s a slow process, but I’m starting to feel everything I need to feel. And it was all because of them.”

Through 4YOU, First Alert 4 will be highlighting Prevent+Ed and their many community efforts.
