ALTON, Ill. (First Alert 4) - A man from Alton died after being mauled by a dog inside of his home.

Robert W. Echols, 53, lived with his brother at the home on Lovejoy Jane. Madison County Coroner Nicholas P. Novacich said that the dog attempted to attack Echols’ brother while he was trying to get inside the house on Friday. The brother was able to get out of the home and go to a neighbor, who called 911 around 4:50 p.m. Echols was pronounced dead less than two hours later.

According to the coroner, preliminary findings from the autopsy noted Echols’ injuries were consistent with animal bites. A final cause of death will be issued after routine toxicology tests and further investigation by the Alton Police Department.
