ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - As the first winter storm of the year approaches the region many are in preparation mode.

St. Louis County emergency officials held a press conference to lay out its plans for Sundays winter weather.

“We do recognize that this will be the most significant storm that we’ve seen in several years. So our message is to get ready for a tough week and to help us out,” said Dr. Sam Page, county executive.

That’s just one of the any messages officials are sharing on Saturday. The St. Louis County Director of Transportation and Public Works, Stephanie Leon Streeter, said road crews started treated the roads at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Streeter said they have over 110 trucks but 20 trucks are currently not filled. The county covers 3200 miles of roads. Streeter noted, it may take the road crews longer than normal to treat or clear all the streets in the county as they are not up to full staff.

Streeter said they are asking for patience as it is a challenging job.

If you are in need of a warm place to stay, the shelter at The Salvation Army on Page is open 24 hours 7 days a week. You can call the shelter at 314-423-7770 for more information.

Dr. Page, along with other emergency officials are urging people to not travel if you don’t have too.

He said throughout the next few days the county will be sending alerts through its text line to keep residents up to date.

You can text ‘SLCOEM’ to 78015 to receive those alerts.
