Page, council in dispute over appointing new St. Louis County Prosecutor
CLAYTON, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The fight over who will appoint a new St. Louis County prosecutor continues.
The current prosecutor, Wesley Bell, is heading to Washington in a few weeks as he won Missouri’s First Congressional District seat in November.
Several St. Louis County council shared their concerns at Tuesday night’s meeting over County Executive Sam Page’s interim appointment of Cort VanoOstran.
The county’s chief communications officer tells First Alert 4, Page wants the council to vote on VanOstran’s appointment before Bell leaves so the new prosecutor can start right away.
Council reiterated what the charter says about filling appointments.
Chair of the St. County Council, Shalonda Webb says, “The rules of engagement are set forth in our in our charter and are clear, and they must be followed, whether it is convenient for the County Executive or not.”
District 7 Councilman, Mark Harder tells First Alert 4, “A vacancy in the office of Prosecuting Attorney shall be filled by the County Executive, subject to confirmation by the Council. I will repeat: confirmation by the Council.”
