CITY SC loses to Minnesota United, playoff hopes slashed

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Louis CITY SC took a brutal loss Saturday against Minnesota United in front of a home crowd.
CITY lost to Minnesota 1-3, moving them 11 points out of the last playoff spot, slashing hopes to a late-season miracle to make the playoffs. CITY has not been officially eliminated from the playoffs yet, but with only five games left in the season, the odds are slim.

CITY opened the scoring early in the first half with a goal by Cedric Teuchert in minute four of the match.

In minute 23, Minnesota leveled the score on a rebound shot that met the back of the net.
CITY and Minnesota went into the half 1-1.
After the halftime break, Chris Durkin and Henry Kessler were subbed out of the match, both sporting an injury. Durkin had left the field with a knee injury, and Kessler had knocked heads with a United player while going up for a challenge in the air.
In minute 52 Minnesota scored.
In minute 61, following a VAR-called handball in CITY’s box, United converted a penalty kick.
The match ended with United having 3 and CITY only having 1.
Pre-game
Minnesota United currently sits ninth in the MLS Western Conference standings, the last spot to make playoffs. A win for CITY would inch them closer to taking that spot.
“When I sit up here and I think and I hope, and I look at what we can do, I’m very optimistic that we will do it, but we’re not there yet,” Hackworth said in a press conference Thursday.
Optimism and playing better than they have all season is CITY’s only hope as they sit in 13th place, eight points behind Minnesota.
For the match, a familiar face has finally ed back with the starting 11. João Klauss will be ing Simon Becher, Cedric Teuchert and Marcel Hartel on the offensive half.
