ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A deal is in the works to sell the vacant Millennium Hotel to a local buyer, according to city leaders and downtown St. Louis stakeholders.

Greater St. Louis, Inc., which represents business interests in the city, said on Thursday that a buyer in the area had submitted an offer to the property’s out-of-state owner that had been accepted, though the organization would not specify other details of the transaction, including the identity of the buyer.

Kurt Weigel, Greater STL’s chief downtown officer, said that moving the building back into local ownership was an important step in reactivating the property, which has been vacant since 2014.

“This is an opportunity to do more great things for the metro area,” he said.

Greater St. Louis said it had made other strides in recent months following Mayor Tishaura Jones’ call to action to create a plan for downtown properties like the Millennium Hotel and Railway Exchange Building, which have also sat vacant under out-of-state ownership.

In an announcement Thursday, the organization said that the St. Louis Development Corporation had made an offer on the Railway Exchange Building. If that offer is not accepted by Sept. 20, they said, the city could petition to use eminent domain to acquire it.

“The Railway and Millennium are similar in that we need this in the hands of people who want what’s best for this city,” Weigel said.
