Missouri voters narrowly approve increase in Kansas City Police Department funding

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Missouri voters re-voted on Tuesday to increase the funding for the Kansas City Police Department.

In 2022, voters approved an increase in how much Kansas City gives to the department, but the Missouri Supreme Court ruled and agreed with the City of Kansas City that the fiscal note showing the ballot measures estimated costs or savings was not accurate and misled voters.

Currently, Kansas City is required to provide 20 percent of its general fund to KD, but with Amendment 4 ing, it increased to a 25 percent requirement.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting Tuesday night, the votes stood at:

  • YES - 549,116
  • NO - 523, 796

Kansas City’s Police Department has been controlled by the state government since 1874 as a result of a pro-slavery governor’s decision in the Civil War era.
