ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Cardinals are sending outfielder Dylan Carlson to Tampa Bay in exchange for some bullpen help, the Cardinals announced.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com was the first to report the trade, which was made just ahead of Tuesday’s 5 p.m. trade deadline. The Cardinals announced the trade just before 5:30 p.m. in a press release.

Reports in recent days indicated the Redbirds were shopping Carlson, with the Washington Nationals being a club of interest. Carlson won the starting center fielder job in Spring Training, but a collision with Jordan Walker during a Spring Training game in late March meant Carlson started the season on the IL. He was later eclipsed in center field by the speedy Michael Siani. So far in 2024, Carlson has appeared 59 games, recording a .198 batting average, 0 home runs and 11 RBI.

The Cardinals will get 33-year-old Shawn Armstrong in the trade, who has spent his 10-year MLB career in Cleveland, Seattle, Baltimore, Miami and Tampa. In 2024, he has appeared in 38 games, with a 2-2 record, 5.40 ERA and one save. His career ERA sits at 4.18 over 280 games.

Armstrong appeared in the Wild Card round of the postseason the past two seasons for the Rays.
